Getting out there from Houston was a nice 225 mile drive to Killeen Texas, where we got our hotel, then just around the corner was the base. So the first thing we did was get the hotel, drop of our night bag, and headed out to the base. We did not even think about stopping for something to eat first, to much excitement in the air. We check in at the "Area Access" office and got our access permits, and map. We where granted access to areas 31, 32, & 34, right down the street from the office. What a sight it was to see, all the Humvee, tanks, and more as we went to the play grounds.
We checked out area 32 first, mostly flat area, easy area, good to start out in, but soon after it was time to check out the other areas. So we headed toward area 34, north of where we were playing (area 32). Area 34 had a lot more to it, hill, flat lands, rivers, forest, & cliffs. By 17:00 we head out and back to the hotel, and dinner, discussed out plans for the next day.
By 09:30 we where back on the trails once again, area 34, all day long. Found some nice trails to climb up and down, and even two where only Alan D. and myself dare try, and it was great. Once of the trails Alan and myself took was down the river and up the banks to the trail. Getting up the banks was a challenge and if look at the photos you will see that my winch (A MileMarker) was impacted with dirt because of the angle of approach was so great, if I had the Warn Winch if would have been even harder to deal with.
Departure time came too quick, 15:15
hours, we where deep in the heart area 34, out came the maps & GPS,
and out we came with no problems at all. Check out with the "Area
Access" post and it was off to get gas and a good car wash. I am
not sure how much I spend getting the mud off but it was well worth time
time and cost for al the fun we had. I would like to Thank those
at Fort Hood for giving us the access to such a great play ground.
